Quotables

Since Middle School I’ve had a thing about quotes.  I kept a quote journal where I wrote down sayings that spoke to me.  Well, here is my digital quote journal to share.  Some are from my own kids, and some I’ve stumbled upon when googling.  I hope you find at least one that speaks to you or makes you smile.

*****

“If you don’t understand how a woman could both love her sister dearly and want to wring her neck at the same time, then you were probably an only child.” (Linda Sunshine)

“More than Santa Claus, your sister knows when you’ve been bad and good.”  (Linda Sunshine)

“A man’s work is from sun to sun, but a mother’s work is never done.” (Anonymous)
Try finding a man that understands a mother’s work is never done …

“A mother understands what a child does not say.” (Jewish proverb)

“The phrase ‘working mother’ is redundant.” (Jane Sellman)
Yes, being a mom is a lot of work and to be honest sometimes I don’t want to do it.  That doesn’t mean I don’t love my kids, because there is no one in this world that I love more.  What got me through some rough days is remembering that this is not only worthy work, it’s God’s work.

On the day you were born I danced over you
On the day you were born I rejoiced
On the day you were born all heaven proclaimed
You’re the child of my love, you’re my choice

Those who are the happiest, never did have everything.  But rather, they are thankful for everything they do have.

Every person’s life is a fairy tale written by God’s fingertips. (Hans Christian Anderson)

Love me when I least deserve it because that is when I need it the most (Swedish Proverb)
I try to remember this when interacting with others.

“What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.”  (Albert Pike)

“A life isn’t significant except for its impact on other lives.”  (Jackie Robinson)

Don’t think of organ donations as giving up part of yourself to keep a total stranger alive. It’s really a total stranger giving up almost all of themselves to keep part of you alive. (Author Unknown)

The measure of life is not its duration, but its donation. (Peter Marshall)

Have you sometimes said that you ‘would give your right hand to help’? That costs you time and commitment.  Why not leave your organs, when you die, to help somebody? It will cost you nothing.

  1. I have two new quotes that have meant so much to me since grieving the loss of my infant daughter:

“Let go of the life we have planned in order to accept the life we have waiting for us.”

“God doesn’t give us what we can handle; God helps us handle what we are given.”

God bless you and your family during your new grief journey.

  2. I am a sister to a 4 year old, a nine month old brother (from dad and stepmom) and twin brothers who are almost seven months old. This morning I got in a fight with my mom about how I can’t sleep from the boys screaming. She had me read this tonight and now I took back everything I said and I can’t even imagining go through what you did. Your faith is so strong and you have such wisdom. I only hope that as I grow older I can have as strong of a faith as you and I pray that you and your family may find peace and I will always remember you story and little Owen, even though I didn’t know him.

    May God be with you,
    Elizabeth

  3. I too have kept a quote journal since middle school and still love them to this day. I am so sorry for your family. When you have a quite moment look up this poem that has brought comfort to me and others I have shared it with. It starts: ‘Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.’ by Mary Elizabeth Frye.

  4. Saw this quote and thought you might want to add it to your collection, if you’re not familiar with it yet:

“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are messengers of overwhelming grief…and unspeakable love.” Washington Irving

  5. It has been said, ‘time heals all wounds.” I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, (protecting its sanity), covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But, it is never gone! – Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy

Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul. And sings the tune without the words and never stops at all. -Emily Dickinson

There are many quotes that I have now grown to hate…everything happens for a reason, the quote about setting something free and if it doesn’t come back it was never yours…urgh! I guess this is what happens when one loses a baby 🙁 I feel your pain…I lost my son at 5 months old.

  6. this is one of my favorites

“Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.”

    Eskimo Proverb
